Massive 6.7 Quake Hits Northeast India

Several building in Imphal, including the market complex, and roads developed cracks while walls of some school buildings have collapsed, officials said.

Meanwhile Minister of Development of North Eastern Region Jitender Singh has said casualties could rise.

India’s Meteorological Department said the epicenter of the quake was in Tamenglong region of Manipur state. Tremors were also felt in Kolkata as well as in the neighboring nations of Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan. However, one Soma Devi (37) fractured her left leg and arm when she fell down a flight of steps while carrying her daughter to safety during the tremor felt on Monday morning.

Another tremor, measuring 3.6, was recorded five hours later. “We are also advising people not to stay in their own houses if the houses are badly damaged”. “Damages to a few buildings residential units and government offices have been reported including damage to a six-storey building in Imphal” said the statement.

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “NDRF team has been instructed to move from Guwahati to the areas affected by the quake”.

A home ministry spokesperson also said that the National Crisis Management Committee, headed by the cabinet secretary, is holding a meeting to review the situation. Home Minister Rajnath Singh also experienced the quake as he is now in Guwahati. I spoke to some Chief Ministers to assess the situation.

The experts, according to broadcaster will advise the Manipur government on issues related to fix and retrofitting of these buildings.

The natural disaster jolted the northern parts of West Bengal, particularly the districts of Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, leaving at least a dozen people injured.
