Massive fire forces evacuations in western New York

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a large fire in western NY has forced residents in the area of the blaze to evacuate their homes.

Niagara County authorities say the fire broke out Wednesday night, forcing the evacuation of 200 nearby homes.

Firefighters from up to eight companies are battling a large three-alarm blaze a tire recycling operation in Lockport on Stevens Street. Crews drew water from the Erie Canal nearby to douse the flames, and tanker trucks hauled in water from neighboring Orleans County.

City of Lockport Police were asking residents in the area of the Stevens Street fire to evacuate their homes. No injuries had been reported.

The cause is still under investigation.
