Fire engulfed a 63-storey skyscraper in downtown Dubai near the world’s tallest building on Thursday night, but the block was successfully evacuated and there were only light injuries, the emirate’s police chief said.
The people of Dubai wanted to celebrating the brand new year with colorful fireworks – but not like this: a monstrous blaze has broken out in The Address Hotel.
In February of this year, a fire was reported at a different skyscraper in Dubai.
The fire engulfed the Address Downtown, one of the most upscale hotels and residences in Dubai, which was likely to have been packed with people because of its clear view of the 828-meter (905-yard) tall Burj Khalifa.
The hotel towers over the Souq Al Bahar, a popular shopping area with walkways that connect to the Burj Khalifa and the Middle East’s largest mall, the Dubai Mall. They said the fire appears to have originated on a 20th floor terrace. The show was to begin at the Burj Khalifa, which organizers said was fitted with 400,000 LED lights.
184-c-18-(Joseph Krauss, AP correspondent)-“in the blaze”-AP correspondent Joseph Krauss reports the huge fire began about two hours before Dubai’s fireworks shows were to begin”. The government tweeted that the hotel fire erupted on the 20th floor and affected only the outer facade of the building.
Then she said she realized, “Oh my God… that’s a fire….” The city was preparing to launch 1.6 tons of fireworks in a breathtaking display to ring in 2016, but the sky was suddenly lit up with hellfire and smoke.
“It’s pretty scary stuff”, she said.
Dubai planned to wow spectators with three separate firework displays.
“You feel sad for the people inside….”
“People started to panic, crushing each other trying to get down the stairs”.

Officials tell ABC News that at least 14 people received minor injuries in the fire.
