Mata inspires Man United to 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg
Manchester United managed to edge past Wolfsburg 2-1 in their last Champions League encounter, but head-coach van Gaal’s concern over the tough schedule remains undiminished.

Manchester United’s Juan Mata and Chris Smalling recap their emotional 2-1 win over Wolfsburg, as the Spaniard notched a goal and an assist in the win. A lot of players are very exhausted, a combination of a lot of matches but we didn’t give much away.
The Dutchman was pleased with many aspects of his side’s display but feels they must remain grounded as they look to build on their first win of the Champions League campaign.
“The players have a day off on Friday, so we will have to wait and see on Saturday, then I can make decisions”.
Winger Young was brought on to replace Antonio Valencia at right-back during United’s victory over Wolfsburg, and Van Gaal said: “He is very important”.
United – who lost their opening Group B fixture 2-1 against PSV – got off to a awful start at Old Trafford when Daniel Caligiuri netted in the fourth minute.
Ahead of the game, Louis van Gaal has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this evening and has given ManUtd.com a team news and injury update.
After the goal it was transforming our team, because we didn’t keep the ball anymore and I didn’t see Wolfsburg pressing so much, so we gave the ball away.
“We again started our second half really well but then, to put it the German way, we conceded such a s– goal.
You have to rotate and that is what I am doing now because I have to protect my players”. “Today, we won this game but it could have been in a better way”, he added.
When asked what he thought the problem was, Van Gaal pointed to the competitive nature of the domestic league.
Wins for United and Manchester City on Wednesday ended a miserable run for English clubs in Europe.

Van Gaal also revealed key midfielder Michael Carrick has been passed fit to play in the game. “I have set my aims always in advance”.
