Matt Campbell hired as Iowa State football coach

Campbell is considered one of the “Young Guns” on the carousel as he’s built Toledo into a MAC power in just 4 seasons.

Rhoads was sacked Monday. Campbell is 35-15 in four seasons with Toledo. The running game is a critical piece in Campbell’s attack with Toledo averaging a conference-high 5.44 yards per carry during his time in charge.

The Rockets failed to reach the final after losing to Western Michigan on Friday, and Pollard closed the deal with Campbell the next day before compensation ever came up. But, with the loss, the Rocket coach and his wife, Erica, were available for a Saturday meeting. “We hit a home run on every one of those points”. Rick Campbell is now the athletic director at Canton South High School. “I threw it up there and you saw the results”, said Norris, who was voted the tournament MVP after having 20 points and nine rebounds.

“We wanted a victor. The compensation would take care of itself”.

The quintet of Monte Morris, Naz Mitrou-Long, Matt Thomas, Abdel Nader and Georges Niang answered the bell.

“I started with the staff”, he said. “Monte was doing a great job of getting in the lane, making plays and guys were feeding off that”. I like to recruit.

“It was good to get these tests early”.

“The biggest thing, I think, would sit around those two areas”. It’s what got him to Iowa State. Thus, two old friends and colleagues are reunited.

“We’re a blue-collar program”, Rhoads said.

“There was a lot of opportunities, but they weren’t right for me”, said Campbell. I need to take some notes from that. I’m going to be diligent.

“We were going bucket for bucket, when we were big, and we needed to get to where we were small and just see if we could do a better job guarding them”, he said.

“I believe in the coaching staff that I’m going bring in here”, Campbell said in his introductory press conference. He’ll consider junior college transfers if they fit his academic and athletic requirements. Campbell plans to do it again. He hasn’t strayed far from those ideals and today he becomes the 32 head football coach in Iowa State history.

Campbell is big on process, culture and building a blueprint for winning.

“We’ll prepare as such”. Campbell said he was so blown away by the energy of the fans and the game-day atmosphere and that he allowed himself to imagine coaching at Iowa State.

When asked if he might sell himself to another football program after a short stay in Ames, Campbell insisted he would not. “This is a really special place”. “It’s gonna be really fun to sit back and watch and enjoy that – because we found our man”.
