Matt Campbell named coach at Iowa State

First reported by The Toledo Blade’s Nick Piotrowicz, Matt Campbell has accepted the head coaching position for the Iowa State Cyclones. Nobody is sure if Campbell will be allowed to coach Saturday or not mostly because the official announcement has not been made.

The head football coach at the University of Toledo owned a gaudy record and left to take over a dismal Big 12 Conference team, seemingly a no-win proposition despite a significant increase in pay and prestige.

Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck’s salary is $800,000 this season, highest in the MAC, according to USA Today’s salary database.

Campbell is taking on one of the toughest jobs in the country, so this won’t be a quick fix, but at 35-years-old, Campbell should bring some youthful excitement and optimism to a program desperately in need of a long-term solution.

Jamie Pollard, athletic director for Iowa State, flew to Detroit on November 27.

Rhoads said he enjoyed one final moment walking off the field with his son, Wyatt, an Iowa State wide receiver.

UT students are disappointed that their talented head coach is moving on.

Multiple media reports from Toledo have indicated that the Rockets are also trying to keep Campbell as their head coach.

Iowa State has a coach its coach of the future and we look forward to seeing what the Cyclones can do going forward.

The Mountaineers held an opponent out of the end zone for the third time, and Skyler Howard threw one touchdown pass and ran for another score to lead West Virginia to a 30-6 win over Iowa State on Saturday.

Campbell is 35-15 as Toledo’s head coach. Current Cyclone assistant coach Louis Ayeni handled coaching duties on the sidelines at the bowl game. “Obviously, we’ve got high goals this year, but this was our first championship opportunity to win, and we did that”. “‘Their fans, the game-day environment and facilities are all incredible”. In seven seasons in Ames, Rhoads went 32-54, but the Cyclones have been a woeful 8-28 the past three seasons. So when Iowa State offered, Campbell didn’t hesitate.

This year’s Toledo team – which had to replace five offensive line starters – got the nation’s attention in September with a 16-12 upset of 18th-ranked Arkansas.

Playing their seventh game without safety Karl Joseph and with all the changes that came about with that loss, the Mountaineers won their fourth straight game by forcing three turnovers and allowing the Cyclones a season-low 284 yards of offense.
