Matt Damon, Lady Gaga win awards at Golden Globes

Inarritu’s movie Birdman won four Oscars last year including for Best Picture and Best Director, and many critics believe the Mexican director could emerge triumphant again this year. However, according to a report by Bustle, the Golden Globe Awards is a project of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), and the organization has the authority to place the movie in the comedy genre.

The Hollywood Reporter and a few other publications still rank Spotlight as the No. 1 contender for best picture at the Oscars while Golden Globes victor The Revenant is sixth in line on the the Hollywood Reporter’s list.

After Leonardo DiCaprio won this year’s Golden Globe award for best actor in a drama, the star of The Revenant used his acceptance speech to “share this award with all the First Nations people represented in this film”.

Matt Damon won best actor in a comedy for his performance in Ridley Scott’s nerdy sci-fi hit “The Martian”.

USA’s fledgling “Mr. Robot” won best drama while Christian Slater won best supporting actor for the series.

And Brie Larson – as predicted – took home the Lead Actress, Drama award.

Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”.

BEST PICTURE Winning best picture at the Golden Globes helps but rarely indicates what will win the big prize come Oscar night.

Jon Hamm won his second Globe for the final season of “Mad Men”. But Lawrence shot back, “We’re at the Golden Globes”.

One person that did react pretty well to one of Ricky’s jokes however, was Jennifer Lawrence when he said: “Jennifer Lawrence made the news when she demanded equal pay for women and she received overwhelming support from people everywhere”.
