Matt Damon of ‘The Martian’ wins Globe for comedy actor

Jennifer Lawrence won her third Golden Globe for a David O. Russell-directed film, grabbing the Best Comedy Actress award for “Joy”.

“Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping deviant scum!” he said by way of greeting the crowd at the event organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“One’s a doorstop, one I use to hit burglars with and one I keep by the bed”, he said… and then clarified explicitly why it would be near his bed.

“It is time that we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and from people that are out there to exploit them”, said the 41-year-old actor, who critics believe may finally win his first Oscar for the movie.

It was Gervais’ fourth stint, having fronted the show from 2010 to 2012 and offending many with his somewhat “mean-spirited” jibes as Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr once described Gervais’ hosting.

Inevitably, his monologue closed with a reference to Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor’s testicles – which are apparently “huge and long” – and a reassuring reminder to the winners that “no one cares about this award as much as you do”. Don’t get emotional – it’s embarrassing.

When Gervais returned on stage, he whispered in Gibson’s ear: “Can I ask you a question?”

Brie Larson, nominated for best actress in a motion picture drama for her searing portrayal of a woman in captivity in “Room”, stunned in a gold sequined halter gown from Calvin Klein, with cutouts at the waist.

The ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel is being hosted by Ricky Gervais who took no time to start poking fun at A-listers.

The series also scored the best television comedy actor globe for Gael Garcia Bernal, while My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend newcomer Rachel Bloom took home the award for best TV comedy actress over favourite Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Matt Damon was named best actor in a movie, comedy, for his role as an astronaut in The Martian.

The moment, of course, referred to Gibson’s infamous 2006 DUI arrest, when he said to a female police officer who was arresting him: “What do you think you’re looking at, sugar tits?”

Winslet paid tribute to her co-star Michael Fassbender, saying: “You are a legend, I would watch you every day”.

The quirky Mozart in the Jungle, which follows elite classical musicians in a fictional NY symphony, pulled off a surprise win over favourites Orange is the New Black and Veep in the best comedy series category.

USA’s “Mr. Robot” won best TV drama for its first season, besting more established favorites like HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Fox’s “Empire”. Best limited series went to “Wolf Hall”.
