There were two big winners at last night’s Golden Globe Awards: “The Revenant” and “The Martian”.

Award-winning British singer-songwriter Sam Smith has won the Golden Globe for best original song, Writings on the Wall.

Matt Damon has finally done it, he has won a Golden Globe, for his acting!

Amy Adams presented the award for Best Actor In A Motion Picture – Comedy with the award going to Matt Damon for his role in The Martian.

From the moment the film was nominated, many complained that the sci-fi adventure film about an astronaut (Matt Damon) stranded on Mars wasn’t really a comedy.

The nomination of a film that seemed pretty straightforward in a category with more traditional comedies “Spy” and “Trainwreck” was controversial from the start. They can give much-needed momentum to films in a crowded field, and in recent years, top Globes have gone to movies that went on to win the Oscar for best picture.

American actress Maura Tierney, who is best known for her role as nurse Abby Lockhart on ER, has won the Best Supporting Actress Series-Limited Series TV Movie Golden Globe. However, Jennifer Lawrence was also nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical for her work as Joy Mangano.

In a sentimental choice that earned a standing ovation from fellow actors at the Beverly Hilton, veteran actor Sylvester Stallone won best supporting actor in a movie for “Creed”. There was also the classic “I’m F**king Matt Damon” music video performed by Kimmel’s then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman, and the host’s response video where he admitted that he was f**king Damon’s long-time collaborator, Ben Affleck.

Awards race dark horse “Steve Jobs” also got some love on Sunday with wins for Kate Winslet, for best supporting actress, and Aaron Sorkin, for the screenplay.

Some see the Golden Globes, voted on by the 90 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as predictors of the more prestigious Academy Awards.

The victories for the two films at the Globes put them in prime position as Hollywood’s annual awards season heats up, leading to the all-important Oscars on February 28.

Other films that vied for the best drama prize – and expect to figure in the Oscars conversation – are lesbian romance Carol starring Cate Blanchett, harrowing kidnap tale Room and the summer action blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road.
