Matt Damon’s “Jason Bourne” takes 1st spot at box office
Aside from Damon, the action packed movie also stars Tommy Lee Jones (U.S. Marshal), Alicia Vikander (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), Vincent Cassel (Irréversible), Julia Stiles (Out of the Dark) and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Well, it was Matt Damon’s return to the “Bourne” franchise that took “Jason Bourne” to the top spot with over $60 million.

Jason Bourne, which cost $120 million to produce, reunites Damon with director Paul Greengrass, who helmed The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum.
The first movie in the series, “The Bourne Identity”, was released in 2002. The score is second best for franchise and Damon’s career.
“It’s no secret that people were anticipating a reunion of [Damon and Greengrass]”, said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief, adding “Putting the team back together made smart business sense”. “Audiences were ready for it and satisfied”. Exit polls showed the audience split 55% to 45% male-female, with 60% 35 and older. The weekend kicked off with a rocky start with “Bad Moms”, an American comedy that collected $23.4 million.
“This was a classic case of counter-programming”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. With these three movies there was something for everyone, even as this was also the second weekend for Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out and Ice Age: Collision Course, which means there was plenty of competition at the box office.
Bad Moms, which debuted at No 3, barely missed second place to Star Trek Beyond, which fell 59% in its second weekend in theaters with $24m. That brings the sci-fi sequel’s domestic haul to $105.7 million. The film has earned $106.5 million in its two weeks of release.
