Matt Harvey misses mandatory Mets practice after getting stuck in traffic

It was very irresponsible to publish the hateful, bitter, inaccurate and misinformed letter (“Matt Harvey, shut up and pitch”, October. 5) about Mets pitcher Matt Harvey. “And the last thing I ever want to do is not be here for my team”, Harvey said. Instead Collins and captain David Wright throw Harvey under the bus, and now you look like the typical Mets in shambles before your first post-season game. Harvey was reportedly stuck in traffic while his teammates were preparing for their matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Harvey’s agent, Scott Boras, did not immediately return a text message from The Associated Press. [Pitching coach] Dan [Warthen] came to me, and he said, ‘We just got a call from Harvey.’ Now who’s we?

Shortly before the workout ended, Alderson said he was aware of Harvey’s absence, but not of the reason.

“Obviously, (Tuesday) was not the greatest”, Harvey told reporters, via ESPN.com. “There’s no excuse. I screwed up”. So there’s not really anything else to say.

Collins has indicated that there will be discipline for Harvey, but that it will be handled in house. They know what happened. They understand. I’m here to get my workout in and be with the team.

What was clear, however, is his teammates were irritated with his absence. “The guys who are here had a great workout”. The right-hander was in the middle of a ruckus last month over his workload on the mound in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately it happened at a bad time, a mandatory time.
