The woman, sitting in the lower box seats next to Tampa Bay’s dugout on the first base side, was struck in the seventh inning Friday night by a ball off the bat of Rays designated hitter Steven Souza Jr. After the inning was over, the game was delayed for about 10 minutes so she could receive medical treatment.
Souza went into the stands to check on her and said the ball hit her near the eye. “I’ll be praying for her, hoping that she’s okay”.
“This thing is about wins and losses”, Danks said. “I couldn’t see it”, Ramirez said.
Said White Sox manager Robin Ventura: “I know it didn’t sound good at all”. “You feel for the lady and her family”.
At the urging of Major League Baseball last December, the Rays extended the protective netting behind home plate across the photographers’ wells on both sides of the home plate to the dugouts. A second screen was installed this season behind the photo area. Souza’s foul ball got through a narrow opening.
It was said that Souza wanted to make plans to visit her during her stay in the hospital. “People are more important than that game right there. That woman’s health is way more important than my results in that game”.
No further injury has been reported since the foul ball struck the fan through the net on Friday’s game, and she is reportedly in stable condition by word of team officials. He won his only start of the season on April 8, allowing one run in six innings against Philadelphia.
“That’s tough. Major League Baseball is trying to do what they can to protect fans, but that’s just a tough situation”. He threw it to me in a good spot.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. “We just could not quite separate the game”. He is 0-5 with a 6.91 ERA over his last five starts, dating to last season.
Forsythe hit a leadoff double in the third, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Guyer’s single. However, he has now gone eight straight starts without striking out as many as 10 batters.
The Chicago attack fell short on six hits and didn’t walk with Brett Lawrie supplying the offense with a two run jack in the 7th that scored Melky Cabrera.
“I think I was doing a good job of getting ahead, getting them into swing mode”, Moore said.
Moore put two runners on in the seventh, but relievers Enny Romero and Alex Colome did the rest, throwing 22/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief.
Quintana lost for the sixth time in the last two seasons when yielding two earned runs or fewer.
The schedule didn’t require the Tampa Bay Rays to use a fifth starter much in the first month of the season, so Erasmo Ramirez went to the bullpen, with three relief outings and a win in his short time there.
