Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols is congratulated on his home run against the Seattle Mariners in the first inning of a baseball game Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in Seattle.

Shoemaker was drilled by a line drive off the bat of third baseman Kyle Seager, in which the ball was recorded at more than 105 miles per hour, according to MLB’s StatCast.

After being hit in the head by a line drive, Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker underwent emergency surgery Sunday night to stop his brain from bleeding.

The line drive off Seager’s bat was estimated to be traveling at 105 miles per hour.

After the game, the Angels announced that a CT scan revealed Shoemaker suffered a small skull fracture and small hematoma. He will see a neurologist today.

Shoemaker was the second Major League Baseball pitcher in the past three months to be struck by a returning ball, after Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Jameson Taillon was hit by a ball travelling at 169kmh but was able to play on. Shoemaker never lost consciousness. “We’ve exhaled a little bit since”.

The right-hander was taken in for surgery and will remain hospitalized in Seattle until he will be allowed to return to California. The 29 year-old is likely done pitching this season. He was replaced by Deolis Guerra. He’s also talked to Shoemaker’s wife, who he said is holding up well.

The Angels traveled to Oakland for a 1pm game against the Athletics on Monday. Iwakuma went seven innings, giving up eight hits and the three runs.
