In baseball, when a pitcher steps up to the mound, they can’t dwell on the possibility of the ball being sent right back at them.
In the second inning of the Angels’ 4-2 win, Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager hit a ball that hit Shoemaker on the right side of his head at 105 miles per hour.
Shoemaker took a line drive off of his head during Sunday’s start and had to be rushed to the hospital.
The Angels did win the game 4-2 and Shoemaker stayed behind as the team had to fly to Oakland shortly after the game.
While being observed in the hospital, continued bleeding was discovered around 9 p.m., Eppler said, so Shoemaker was taken for surgery to stop the bleeding.
While it’s not a common occurrence, the danger of being hit in a ball sport is an ever present danger.
With one out in the second inning, Shoemaker was hit on the right side of the head on a sharp liner off the bat of Kyle Seager – a ball with an exit velocity of 105 miles per hour, according to MLB Statcast.
Although the right-hander was “speaking, interacting and doing well” after a third CT scan revealed some swelling where blood had clotted, Shoemaker underwent surgery Sunday night at Seattle’s University of Washington Medical Center to stop the bleeding.
Shoemaker didn’t lose consciousness and was able to trot off the field on his own.
Deolis Guerra (3-0) was the first of the relievers to enter, followed by Jose Alvarez, Mike Morin, Cody Ege and JC Ramirez. Robinson Cano hit his 31st homer off Ege in the sixth and Nelson Cruz hit his 35th in the eighth off Ramirez, both solo shots. “I don’t think anyone wants to call him right now”, Scioscia said. Iwakuma went seven innings, giving up eight hits and the three runs.
