Matz Takes No-Hit Bid Into 8th, Mets Beat Padres, 5-1

The flirtation ended with one out in the eighth inning — and Matz five outs away — as San Diego’s Alexei Ramirez singled over the first base bag. Schimpf had a pinch-hit single off Reed in the eighth and stayed in the game.

“I put us in a hole 5-0 in the first inning and what did they do?”

Mets pitcher Steven Matz has not given up a hit through seven innings against the San Diego Padres. “So I wasn’t going to let that happen”. “I made the wrong decision”.

With the infield playing halfway, Flores hit a grounder over the mound that was fielded in front of second base by Schimpf. Rather than try for an inning-ending double play, the second baseman fired home and his throw sailed well wide as Walker slid in safely.

“They did not roll over at all”, Padres manager Andy Green said.

DeGrom once again did not receive much run support, but the Mets did just enough. He just went aggressively and threw the baseball.

Padres: RHP Luis Perdomo (5-6, 6.80 ERA) starts Monday night at Tampa Bay as San Diego begins the final leg of its nine-game road trip. “He didn’t show me the video or the boxscore, so I just kind of assume he did well”. Ynoa yielded Yangervis Solarte’s run-scoring single in the ninth.

“I let us down tonight”, he said.

Brewers 7, Reds 3 • Ryan Braun hit two homers, doubled and drove in six runs as host Milwaukee avoided a sweep.

After three relievers retired the last 19 batters in Friday’s game, deGrom pushed the streak to 32 straight without a hit before surrendering a one-out single to Schimpf in the fifth.

Familia was two strikes from closing it out when Myers drove a 97 miles per hour sinker to left-center.

The major league leader with 39 saves, Familia has blown three of his past six chances after converting 52 straight regular-season opportunities dating to a year ago – the third-longest streak in baseball history. They made it 2-0 when Walker hit his 21st leading off the fourth.

Solarte also jolted NY when his two-out homer in the seventh tied it at 1. “I think if you’re anxious about your future, you don’t do almost as well in the present”. “The only thing on my mind was getting outs”, Matz said.

Before that, deGrom was rolling along in sweltering humidity on a 91-degree night.

After d’Arnaud led off with a single, Alejandro De Aza was hit in the neck by Buddy Baumann’s 87 miles per hour fastball.

Pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson’s sacrifice fly put NY ahead 2-1 in the seventh.

Cosart will be making his third start for San Diego, which acquired him from Miami on July 29. The right-hander yielded one run and three hits in six innings but is still looking for his first major league win since September 17, 2015.

“Guess it was a coin flip”, NY second baseman Neil Walker said. This will be Matz’s first career game against the Padres. He was sidelined by a shoulder injury previous year that eventually required surgery. RHP Colin Rea (right elbow) does not have a date for surgery yet. San Diego has been the victim of a no-hitter 10 times in franchise history.

Beneath a dark sky with lightning flashing, the Padres produced some quick thunder against Verrett (3-8), who has been filling in for injured starter Matt Harvey. The Padres signed Richard, who pitched for the club from 2009 through 2013, on August 5. The Padres couldn’t get the runner to second, but Matz needed to throw 20 pitches to get a pair of forceouts and a strikeout.

Mets rookie left-hander Steven Matz has always been regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.
