Mauricio Pochettino: Europa League games could help Tottenham get over Wembley hoodoo

“The three players that are so important to the team in terms of the results and who are missed when they don’t play are Moussa Dembele, Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld”.

Finally one has gone in giving Spurs’ hope of a place in the Europa League life again. Mauricio Pochettino’s team responded well to the setback, however, revealing a maturity that should serve them well in any tough upcoming tests in the UEFA Europa League.

Pochettino’s side were already eliminated from the Champions League before their last Group E fixture on Wednesday, but they rounded off a frustrating campaign with a dominant display against the Russian champions.

“It was very important to get the win for different reasons – to get to the Europa League, put all the Wembley stories to bed and keep playing well”, said the defender.

“I think we should have done better”.

“Against Chelsea, Swansea and tonight we have played better”. We’re disappointed. But we need to be alive and try to win that trophy. The Tottenham Hotspur manager referred to it in February 2014 as a “competition that kills you” and one in which he had “no interest” when he was at Southampton and it looked as though they had the chance to qualify for it.

“We have the squad and the fitness to cope with two games a week”.

A deflated hush enveloped Wembley but before any frustration could grow, the home side were level.

“It’s good to go into the Europa League with a win here, and especially for next season as well, so we’re very happy we finally won here”. It’s an important period we have ahead. “We know it’s not a Wembley thing and we want to show that to the world”. It is a big pitch and it should suit our style of play. It is important to send out our support because he has a problem with his family.

Tottenham beat United 3-0 at White Hart Lane last April, before Mourinho took over in May, but Kane did little to stand out ― to the amusement of Reds’ fans on social media and his own frustration.

The Tottenham boss is expected to make some changes to his starting eleven in order to give some of his key men a rest with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kieran Trippier and Kevin Wimmer pushing for starts at the back.

As final games go, CSKA at home is about as easy as it gets.

Tottenham’s recent spate of contract renewals is set to continue, as the club plans to renew Toby Alderweireld’s deal. It was hard because we were out of the Champions League but it showed how big our club is, so thank-you to them from my staff and players. That’s why so many players have signed their contracts, they all believe in this club and in the technical staff.
