Max Scherzer wins 18th, Nationals beat Marlins 8-3

Trea Turner took a 3-2 slider from Austin Brice for a ride to left field in the top of the seventh, sending a solo shot out to the corner to make it 6-0 Nationals. Fernandez turned in yet another almost flawless performance, allowing three hits and striking out 12 in eight innings. He’s tied for with Chicago’s Jon Lester for the most wins in the NL.

“Tanner has been very valuable to us”, Nationals manager Dusty Baker said.

“We got some good offensive days out of some guys especially after our offense was a little sleepy the last couple of days”, Baker said.

“I think this is the best feeling I’ve had in a baseball game”, Inciarte said. “It’s exciting and I enjoy it”.

Prior to the home runs allowed by Yelich and Dietrich, Scherzer had only allowed two hits.

“I haven’t been pitching in a game for a really long time and (my stamina) could have been a factor”, Chen said through a translator. But you’ll beat yourself up and drive yourself insane if you try to sit here every single start worrying about the negatives.

I could probably just stop there because there’s not much more to describe in a slim victory such as this, but let’s marvel at José for a second here.

Wilson Ramos added an RBI double and Jayson Werth had a run-scoring single.

Espinosa then scored when Miami made two errors on the same play – Koehler threw a pickoff attempt into center field, and center fielder Yelich, trying to pick and throw to the plate, bobbled the ball.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a big three-run home run for the Nationals in the fourth inning that gave them a commanding four-nothing lead over Tom Koehler who fell to (9-12) this season.

“You can’t really afford to spot Max a 4-0 lead”, Koehler said.

The Braves are 11-24 in their last 35 Thursday games, and 5-0 in their last five against the NL East. Atlanta is also 5-0 in their last five against a team with a winning record and 5-0 in their last five overall.

Marlins: LHP Adam Conley (finger) is going to throw a simulated game on Wednesday and could re-join the team in some capacity before the end of the season.

Nationals: LHP Gio Gonzalez (11-10, 4.48) will take the mound on Friday in Pittsburgh against RHP Jameson Tailon (4-4, 3.39) to begin a three-game series against the Pirates in the final road trip of the season. Roark has pitched considerably better of late, yielding just three runs on 17 hits to post a 2-1 mark with a 1.08 ERA in his last four games.

What you just saw was a glimpse of the Marlins best punch, the reason they broke open the piggybank to extend Stanton to that gargantuan contract and will be willing to wait another year to seriously shop Fernandez to other clubs. Taking a loss his last time out, Urena posted two innings with seven hits and seven earned in Philly.

Tanner Roark pitched well but enough to get the win against Jose Fernandez
