Maya DiRado swims in 400-meter individual medley finals

The Hungarian swimmer broke Yu Shiwen’s world record in the process, dominating the race from start to finish, touching the wall in a stunning time of 4.26.36. She won the 400m individual medley with a new world record time of four minutes, 26.36 seconds; she lowered the existing record by 2.07 seconds. She owns a silver medal in this event from the 2012 Olympics.

Hosszu almost clipped the 400m IM world record in the preliminary heat, finishing 0.15 seconds off the mark.

DiRado, a 23-year-old Northern California native, finished with a time of 04:31.15 in her first Olympic Games.

The Rio Games mark a beginning for DiRado.

Aimee Wilmott eventually finished down in seventh, but her teammate Hannah Miley will be heartbroken having finished just 0.15 seconds from the podium. She also earned a silver medal in the event from the 2015 World Championships.
