‘Maya & Marty’ aims to show variety still the spice of life
Of course, we knew the show would be a hit no matter who the guests – Maya and Marty have been friends for so long, when they get back together it’s like they never left SNL.

Singer/actress Miley Cyrus made a special television appearance on Tuesday (May 31) for the premiere of NBC’s new variety show Maya and Marty. The series will film each week at NBC’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. It’ll be a variety show, with song and dance numbers, as well as comedy sketches.
“Best Time Ever” with Neil Patrick Harris dropped like a boulder in the ratings last fall, but the network last night rolled out “Maya & Marty”, and it turned out to be “Saturday Night Live” lite. The hour seemed to be sweating NBC product, with goofs on “Chicago Fire” and “Little Big Shots”, and with Jimmy Fallon showing up to play the Sizzle Twins and maybe remind us of his “Tonight Show”. Thompson mugged up a storm, as usual, as Steve Harvey, with Short and Fallon clowning around for far too long with fake bad teeth as the Sizzle Twins.

Next, Miley ditched the trousers and tophat, showing off her gams, and slaying a rendition of Peggy Lee’s “I’m A Woman“. The punchlines had no wit, no connection to Brown’s book – it was very badly written, and most of the humor was simply vulgar. No matter: Maya and Marty ought to have really committed to the old-school variety show format, freshening it with their talent and some good writing. The songstress first came out in a black pantsuit with a tuxedo jacket and sparkly top hat to perform Leonard’s “I’m Your Man“.
