Reacting sharply to Modi’s speech in Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh earlier in the day, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said the decision had caused huge difficulties to honest and poor people.

Addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur, Modi said, “Aaj ghareeb chain ki neend so raha hai aur ameer neend ki goliyan dhoond rahe hain”.

“Whatever has happened is for good”, she said, lending support to the move by his son to demonetise high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

The decision has caused chaos across the country as people stand in long lines at banks waiting to exchange old 500-rupee and 1,000-rupee notes so they can complete basic tasks like grocery shopping. After Pandit Nehru passed away, many prime ministers came and went but that committee report is still lost in files. When I was young, poor people used to ask for “kadak” (strong) tea but it spoils the mood of rich.

Invoking Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister said he purposely chose his birth anniversary for the visit here to launch projects. But you did not make higher denomination currency notes illegal. “This is an insult to commoners and in bad taste”, the TMC supremo said in a tweet after Modi’s statement in Ghazipur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made an impassioned plea to the nation to give him just 50 days to weed out ill-gotten wealth in the country.

Saying that he was pained by the hardships faced by the people, Modi hit out at Opposition parties saying that those with black money are nervous.

Congress spokesman Ajoy Kumar told news agency that Modi’s “dictatorial decision of surgical strikes against black money has turned into a surgical infection for 99 per cent common man of the country”. Bear with me for 50 days.

Many low-income people including maids, drivers and local traders, without access to bank accounts and who store cash at home, complain that their savings have been completely wiped out.

He said the government had not taken the decision on demonetisation in haste. “Yet he is not making them public”, he said.

Following decisions were also taken keeping in view the convenience of the public.
