Detroit Tigers legend Al Kaline smiled when he spoke about the times he spent with Yogi Berra during Baseball Hall of Fame weekends in Cooperstown, New York. He was also known for his good command of the English language – one that put him in Bartlett Familiar Quotations.

Dale Berra, a major league infielder, who briefly played for his father on the Yankees in 1985; Tim, who played one season for the NFL’s Baltimore Colts, and Lawrence Jr.

Berra won 10 championships as a catcher for the New York Yankees, but he will perhaps be best remembered for the head-scratching adages he contributed to American conversation. When you combine Berra’s career a player, coach, and manager, Berra ended up in the World Series a grand total of 21 times. Over his 19-year playing career, Berra hit.285/.348/.482, with 358 home runs.

Kaline finished second to Berra for the American League MVP in 1955.

Rest in peace Yogi Berra – a New York Yankee legend. His 56.1 wins above replacement are tied with Mike Piazza for fifth most by a catcher in major league history. That being said, he would sometimes deny coming up with some of the sayings, stating “I really didn’t say everything I said“.

As for Berra’s infamous “Yogi-isms“, there are too many for Lamoriello to name a favourite. “90% of the game is half mental”.

David Robertson had hoped to visit with Yogi Berra this weekend during a four-game visit to Yankee Stadium. He attended the charity money distribution events and the player parties and was always sought after by amateur players and officials for autographs and pictures because, well, he was Yogi.

“I asked him, Yogi Berra, do you want a big table?”

He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame also in 1972. He came down from Harts Hill Inn when they had the dinner up there for the Mickey Mantle Foundation and it was a on a Sunday and when he came in he was exhausted and he came to the bar and I offered him a drink and he wanted a vodka on the rocks.
