It also somehow involves a UFC fighter with no boxing experience literally boxing one of the best boxers of all time.

“The Notorious”, 28, took a huge step towards landing the biggest fight of his career last month by convincing the UFC brass to let him enter the boxing world.

The bout will take place in Las Vegas.

Both boxers have since confirmed that a deal was finalized on their individual social media accounts. “The fight is on”, McGregor wrote in all caps, above photos of himself and Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr.

It will be broadcast as pay-per-view on Showtime, with whom Mayweather has a contract.

More as we learn it.

The Irishman McGregor hasn’t fought this year since beating Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title after taking some paternity leave as he and his wife had their first child. “The sky’s the limit on this”.

Mayweather, however, simply went for a promotional poster video of the event, with the tagline: “It’s official”. It is interesting to note that McGregor can capture millions of UFC spectators to watch the fight.

“Everybody is happy with this deal”, White said.

“As with every Mayweather and McGregor fight part of the appeal is the spectacle and outsize personalities who are participating in it”, Espinoza said. That’s closer to McGregor’s current 155-pound weight class than Mayweather’s 147-pound division.

UFC President Dana White appeared on Sportscenter on ESPN to address the announcement of the fight. “It’s the right fight at the right place at the right time”.

The fight is expected to be a pay-for-view blockbuster, as organisers are hoping it can challenge the 4.6 million pay-per-view buys for Mayweather-Pacquiao.

McGregor landed 40 of his 93 strikes, 32 of which were significant, according to FightMetric.

On Monday, it was revealed that Mayweather Promotions had provisionally reserved the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for August 26. Twelve minutes later, Mayweather added, “It’s official”, also in all caps, above a promotional poster.

Mayweather is the favorite with an undefeated (49-0) record, but he has been retired since September 2015.

McGregor might have a puncher’s chance against Mayweather, but that doesn’t tend to mean much against arguably the most technical defensive boxer to ever put on gloves.
