Mazda Recalling millions of older model cars

The good news is that Mazda vehicles don’t appear to be prone to the sudden shut-offs that we saw in last year’s recalled GM cars.

Mazda says it put too much grease on electrical contact points in the switches when the cars were manufactured.

Recently, Mazda came out and advised that if you have a 1990’s model Mazda, then you need to be aware of faulty ignition switches.

Mazda has announced plans to recall roughly 1.3 million vehicles in the US because grease acummulating in the ignition switch could cause a fire. The situation doesn’t affect the operation of any safety features or devices in the vehicle either, Mazda adds. “If the ignition switch overheats, there would be an increased risk of a fire”. From there, supervisors must file the issue presented by the employee into a formal process, which handles each report and determines the severity of the problem.

“In affected vehicles, the ignition lock actuator may bind, making turning the key hard or causing the ignition to get stuck”, reads the NHTSA recall notice. Owners of these models will be notified by Mazda and the company’s dealers will be replacing the ignition switch. However, the incidents were isolated in Japan.
