Mazda is recalling 2.2 million cars and SUVs worldwide because the rear hatches can fall on people and injure them.

According to The Detroit News, this recall is for 2010 to 2013 Mazda3 5-door models, 2012 to 2015 Mazda5s, 2016 CX-3s and 2013 to 2016 CX-5s.

Mazda said the corrosion protecting coating applied to the hatch lift supports at the factory was not sufficient.

Though water in the supports would be bad enough, the corrosive effect will be magnified if that water contains road salts, like the kind used for de-icing in some parts of the country. Fortunately, however, there have been no reports of any accidents or injuries in connection with the issue.

The recall affects more than 759,000 cars and SUV’s in the US and Canada.

If you are behind the wheel of a Mazda you may have to bring the auto in for service.

Notifications are going out to Mazda owners in September or October telling them when to take their vehicle to a local dealer.
