‘Maze Runner’ outruns Johnny Depp’s ‘Black Mass,’ ‘Everest’ stuns

Coming in at number two in this weekend’s box office is the debut of Johnny Depp’s latest film Black Mass, co-starring Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon and the soon-to-be Doctor odd Benedict Cumberbatch. The pic, which has generated solid critical support following its showings at the Telluride, Venice and Toronto film festivals, appears likely to finish the weekend in the mid-range of recent projections.

The box office numbers were no surprise to fans of the first Maze Runner film.

Mobsters, mountain climbers, and teenage racers piled into multiplexes this weekend, lifting the overall box office, but preventing any one film from dominating ticket sales. Many thought that Johnny Depp would have taken the top spot with his new look in Black Mass, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“We are setting up a lot of things that aren’t necessarily apparent in the second movie, but it will pay off big time in the third movie”, Ball told Variety. That puts it in line with other Beantown crime dramas such as “The Departed“, which started with $26 million in 2006 and “The Town“, which kicked off to $23.8 million in 2010.

While not devastating, it should be noted that the first film, The Maze Runner, opened to $32 million. That’s still a better second week than last weekend’s champ, The ideal Guy, which slipped to fourth and $9.6 million. It’s clear that men in their mid-30s are not the target audience, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that this second instalment isn’t very good.

Fifth place went to Everest, which opened exclusively on 3-D, IMAX, and premium screens and earned a whopping $7.6 million in only 545 locations. The religious-themed thriller earned just $647,000 in its Friday take, with an estimated opening weekend under $2 million.

Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation is inching closer to $200 at the domestic box office. But, with “Paramount” is not so glad to see the figures as “Captive” tanked, even though its theater count was much lower.
