Discussing the defeat to City, Mourinho said: “We lost three points but that’s the Premier League”.

Jose Mourinho joined Manchester United this season as their manager.

It is the first time Mourinho has lost three straight games within the same season since he was at Porto in 2002 and it left United six points behind early pace-setters Manchester City.

Paul Scholes has claimed that Marcus Rashford’s performance was the only positive aspect for Manchester United after their 3-1 loss to Watford on Sunday afternoon at Vicarage Road.

Mazzarri’s tactical adjustment to bring on Juan Zuniga proved to be an inspired decision, as the substitute scored just 53 seconds after entering the field to help life Watford into the top half of the table.

He told BT Sport: “In the first half for about 25 to 30 minutes we didn’t play well and that is something that we can control”. In that second goal, for example, it was an individual mistake because we know we have to press the wing-backs outside the box and not let them take advantage of being one against one in the box. The referee’s and the linesman’s mistake is not under my control. I think no controversy.

“I reflect on three factors from the match, but only one of them I can improve”, Mourinho said.

The closest United came to the Watford goal before conceding was Zlatan Ibrahimovic hitting the sidenetting and Paul Pogba, the world’s most expensive player, hitting the crossbar with a dipping shot.

When pressed about the injury later on in the press conference, Mourinho responded: “I don’t know, I promise I don’t know”.

But it is in this area of the field that Scholes believes United have their greatest problems, saying his former team-mate Michael Carrick, an unused substitute against Watford, ought to start.

Tottenham leapt up to third place, four points below leaders City, after bouncing back from their opening Champions League loss to Monaco by sinking Sunderland at White Hart Lane. He keeps changing his team around and it looks like he doesn’t have a clue what his best XI is.

“(Having had) no pre-season, he had a very good impact in the first game and it’s normal that, after that, he has a little decrease.
