McCaffrey leads Stanford in Rose Bowl romp over Hawkeyes
Just when it seems like he’s about to swap paint or crash, he’s …

Stanford was playing in the Rose Bowl for the third time in four years, winning twice, evening its record to college football’s oldest bowl game to 7-7- 1.
As Shipanik settled into an easy chair to watch the 2016 Rose Bowl, surrounded by family in the basement of their home in Hudson, he showed the game helmet that he wore during the 1958 season. “I might just have to nickname him that now”. While he also added a handful of splash plays on an assortment of perimeter runs and screens, it was McCaffrey’s ability to notch a rare “100-100” game (100 rushing yards; 100 receiving yards) that will resonate with evaluators intrigued by his big-play potential. McCaffrey put up a staggering 248 all-purpose yards in the first half alone, punctuated by both his game-opening touchdown and a 63-yard punt return that put Stanford up 28-0 in the quarter and silenced Iowa’s sizable cheering section. “We didn’t have an answer for him”.
Hogan ran eight yards for a touchdown on Stanford’s second possession before a 94,268-person crowd. Several of these players stood in the Rose Bowl lockerroom late Friday night and talked about how, at the very least, they might wring out some motivation from the 45-16 loss to Stanford.
“He earned that trip to NY and nobody on our team would disagree with that”, said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, whose team finished 12-2.
“It’s impossible to duplicate that, ” Ferentz said. We don’t have anybody like that – and I mean that with all respect to our players. For Clemson, Watson improvises and orchestrates chaos on broken plays.
Even McCaffrey, though, is an example of overachievement.
“Great players always play with a chip on their shoulder, no matter if they have a reason to or not”, McCaffrey said. Florida was routed for the third straight time and all phases of the game contributed.
In the regular season McCaffrey averaged 252.9 all-purpose yards per game, leading the nation with second place going to Tyler Ervin of San Jose State who averaged only 200.8 all-purpose yards per game. And went to 38-3 after three quarters.
And it was the start of a long day of reflection for Heisman Trophy voters too biased, stubborn or lazy to understand or concede the most dynamic player in the country resided in Palo Alto and played for Stanford University from the Pac-12 conference.
“For us to have a legacy, it was awesome and wonderful”, said Martinez, who is a senior.
With a first down at the Iowa 31, Hogan pretended to fumble by putting the ball on the ground, but he never removed his hands from it. McCaffrey contributed to the trickery by falling forward as if to recover the fumble.
– Ezekiel Elliott ran for 149 yards and matched a Fiesta Bowl record with four touchdowns to spark No. 7 Ohio State’s prolific offense in a 44-28 win over eighth-ranked Notre Dame. All but 26 of those yards, however, were wiped out on a holding penalty. But by the time the Hawkeyes were trailing 21 to nothing, the rink was full of Iowans. “That just doesn’t happen in this locker room”. He was the Heisman runner-up but probably should have won the bronze bauble.
McCaffrey sprinted past the 279 yards by USC’s Reggie Bush against Texas in 2006, past the 314 from Oregon’s DeAnthony Thomas against Wisconsin in 2012, past the 315 from Michigan’s Steve Breaston versus the Longhorns in 2005.
But McCaffrey is a better all-around player and had the better individual season. Iowa’s Marshall Koehn responded with a 39-yard effort.
