McCain defeats Republican challengers to win Arizona primary

But McCain has been running a strong campaign, drawing support from business and community leaders and retired military officers. They are Gary Kiehne, Ken Bennett, Paul Babeu, Shawn Redd and Wendy Rogers.

Sen. John McCain, the incumbent in the race, began his first term in Congress in 1983.

“We’re going to do well, not great, but we’re going to do well”, McCain said, according to The Washington Post.

The 4th District, which includes San Tan Valley and Florence in Pinal County, features a primary challenge to three-term Rep. Paul Gosar. Former Buckeye City Councilman Ray Strauss has benefited from more than $280,000 in spending by the group that seeks to unseat “freedom caucus” members who ousted House Speaker John Boehner.

Meanwhile, in Florida Wasserman Schultz is facing a primary challenge from her left. Kelli Ward is their messenger. His campaign staff later said he was jokingly referring to himself.

In what may be Senator John McCain’s toughest political battle yet, a former state senator Kelli Ward challenged him in Arizona’s primary Tuesday.

The 80-year-old who was his party’s 2008 presidential nominee easily defeated former state Sen.

In a pair of interviews last week, McCain dismissed Ward’s blunt attacks as part of a “dive to the bottom” in politics that won’t result in victory.

The untested Ward could also be an easier opponent for Kirkpatrick, potentially making it easier for Democrats to win control of the Senate this November. He’s hoping voters ignore a federal judge’s recent order referring him for criminal contempt of court charges.

I am confident that our movement to save America will continue- those of us who believe that “Liberty ought to be the direct end of Government” as Patrick Henry wrote. Perkins and Jonathan Chane, a local attorney, have spent resources attacking each other in that party’s primary.

The scene was quiet at the polling center at the Church of the Beatitudes near W Glendale and 7th avenues at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

But that was not the case, at least in closely watched nominating races in Florida.

In another notable statewide race, five Republicans are vying for three seats on the Arizona Corporation Commission, a utility regulation panel.

Rubio, who abandoned his presidential campaign in March, cleared the initial hurdle in his battle for a second six-year term in the U.S. Senate.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio won the Republican primary despite a cloud of legal troubles hanging over him.

Unlike the state’s presidential primary back in February, independents are allowed to request either a Republican, Democratic or Green Party ballot at the polls.

Wasserman Schultz, the embattled ex-chair of the Democratic National Committee, faces what is perhaps expected to be the closest race of the dozens of primary elections Tuesday.

“The balance of the Senate and the outcome of the presidential election are all hanging on Florida”, Rubio predicted in a fundraising appeal late on Tuesday.

Voters in Arizona and Florida will head to the polls on Tuesday to determine the general election candidates in some of the country’s top House races and to solidify two marquee Senate contests that will likely decide the fate of the chamber’s majority.

Meghan Cox, who dropped her early voter ballot off on her way to work Tuesday, disagreed.

Voters who go to the polls must show identification, either a valid Arizona driver license or ID, tribal identity card or other government-issued identification or a combination from an approved list.
