McCarthy: Broncos deserved the win

It wasn’t exactly Super Bowl hype, but a matchup of unbeaten teams had a certain excitement surrounding it, especially for a Week 8 National Football League game.

The Sunday Night Football game between the Broncos and the Packers was the game that I thought would finally expose the Broncos for what they were – a team with a talented defense and a wily, yet physically incapable quarterback in Peyton Manning.

The Packers were beaten in almost every phase of the game.

The flag didn’t lead to any Green Bay points, but it was the principle that mattered to Harris.

The Carolina Panthers (7-0) standout as the NFC’s lone undefeated squad, but even after Monday night’s arduous overtime victory in the rain they stand as home underdogs against the Green Bay Packers (6-1) in Week 9’s Sunday afternoon match up at Bank of American Stadium.

All in all, it was a game to forget for the Packers and their faithful. Obviously, we did a few good stuff during the bye week that helped us, as a team, understand exactly where we want to go forward. What used to be a heavy dose of Cover 2 to take away the deep throws while sacrificing the underneath routes and the running game has turned into single-high safety with press-man coverage on the outside.

Which brings us to Peyton Manning.

– Davante Adams played for the first time since being injured in the September 28 game against Kansas City.

Thomas lit up the Packers for 168 yards on eight receptions.

There was a brief period of time when folks wondered if John Elway would end up on a different list with fellow Hall of Famer Dan Marino – that of great quarterbacks who never lifted the Lombardi Trophy.

If there was any question if the Broncos defense would be up to the task against Aaron Rodgers and a high-powered Packers offense, the Broncos answered it with a resounding “Yes!” However, Matt Flynn was the quarterback in that game. The Broncos outgained the Packers 500 yards to 140.

Before delivering a jab at his critics who contended he was washed up at 39, noting, “I don’t look at this like an “I told you so” moment because I don’t really listen to what you say in the first place”, Manning said it was nice to win one for his notoriously competitive team owner whose. The Broncos got a touchdown from Ronnie Hillman roughly 11 minutes into the game.

– After being limited to four carries against San Diego, Eddie Lacy got the ball on Green Bay’s first two plays from scrimmage.

Both Matthews and Hillman returned the next series.

– If the game had ended up being close, Green Bay wouldn’t have been doing itself any favors, as it called two timeouts in the third quarter. “They were clearly a better team”. However, a second straight big passing game by an opposing quarterback – and often on crossing routes – is a bad trend which needs to be cleaned up. Adams was fully recovered from his ankle injury, but he finished with only one catch for eight yards, and he had a drop. Also, his loss showed as well.

The Green Bay Packers have not lost back-to-back games since the 2013 season. Anderson came in and ran 14 times or 101 yards and a 28-yard score that put Denver ahead 24-10. This was a big game. By contrast, the Packers didn’t have a completion longer than 17 yards and Randall Cobb was the leading receiver with just 27 yards on six catches.
