Speaking with reporters Sunday, Washington GM Scot McCloughan would not address whether the team was interested in bringing Cooley back.

Zac Boyer of the Washington Times passed along Hall’s diagnosis, with head coach Jay Gruden adding, “it’s nothing major”.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III throws against… “You want to get, obviously, better fundamentally, and get your scheme taught and find out your best players”.

“This is probably the first training camp where I came in wanting to work”, Hall cracked. We got a lot of young guys some quality repetitions. The Redskins finished last in the NFC East for the sixth time in seven years. Until the preseason is over with, and we play Miami (to open the regular season), we don’t know exactly who our starters are going to be anywhere. “We have a depth chart … that means pretty much nothing”.

X-rays on DeAngelo Hall’s toe came back negative, and the Redskins’ veteran cornerback is listed as day-to-day. Washington’s second exhibition game is at home against the Detroit Lions on Thursday.

Gruden has already declared wide receivers DeSean Jackson (right shoulder sprain) and Jamison Crowder (hamstring) out for Thursday’s game. “If you put your quarterback into situations where you control the line of scrimmage and run the football, it gives you the opportunity to play-action and get outside the pocket and do a lot more things”. “So, from his basic performance, just critiquing Robert, it was not even close to being good enough to what we expect from that quarterback position”.

“The number one objective is to keep him healthy, keep him upright, and then to just see how he steadily progresses throughout this year”, Gruden said.

Meanwhile, the Redskins worked out two free-agent prospects at tight end and signed Ernst Brun Jr. after placing Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen on the injured reserve list.

Linebacker Will Compton has a groin injury, though Gruden joked he’d never even heard of the injury Compton suffered.

For 20 days, a new-look Redskins coaching staff and squad slogged away at the task of getting better under Richmond’s sweltering August heat, but far fewer fans showed interest this year in cheering on the process. “Depends how we do today on the practice field”.
