McCrory: Business lobby group helped shape House Bill 2

Are we really talking about this?’ Not on my watch. “There are four parts of it, two parts that the Chamber of Commerce helped write, in North Carolina”, he said.

The governor has tried to distance himself from the law-which has solicited boycotts from entertainers and cost Charlotte the NBA All-Star game in 2017-in other areas. A Public Policy Polling survey in May found 35 percent of voters favored HB2, with 44 percent opposed. Some out-of-state institutions have prohibited official travel to North Carolina.

A Court of Appeals later stayed the law that called for less early voting and required a state-issued photo ID to vote. That blow may result in an $100 million economic loss for the state.

McCrory now trails his Democratic opponent, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, by an average of 3.6%, according to RealClearPolitics.

“It’s only a five-page bill”, McCrory explained in calling on critics to read it.

House Bill 2 was approved during a one-day special session in March.

McCrory continues to insist the anti-trans rules are “common sense”, but the state has faced a string of lawsuits as human rights groups believe HB 2 to be a clear violation of the US Constitution.

McCrory might also want to rethink his plea for voters to “do what’s right” this November, as the most recent poll from Monmouth University shows McCrory trailing Democrat Roy Cooper by 9 points. They jumped in to overrule Charlotte city officials who allowed transgender people to use the facilities that matched their gender identity.

In the more than 200 localities that provide affirming bathroom access for trans people, there’s never been a single verified case of a transgender individual attacking someone else in a public restroom.
