McCrory, Cooper speak to NC Chamber amid LGBT law boycotts

The U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday that a North Carolina law limiting protections to LGBT people violates federal civil rights laws and can’t be enforced.

A letter states that the law violates part of the Civil Rights Act banning discrimination based on sex.

“Please advise the department, therefore, no later than the close of business on May 9, 2016, whether you will remedy these violations of Title VII including by confirming that the state will not comply with or implement HB2”, Gupta added.

The state law restricts transgender people from using public, multiple-occupancy bathrooms designed for people of the opposite “biological” gender.

If the determination is upheld, it could cost the state millions of dollars in federal school funding, the Observer reports.
