McDaniels Stuns Colts; Will Stay with Patriots

Weeks before the Super Bowl, there were reports that McDaniels was the top choice to be the new head coach for the Colts. But on the field since 2010, it’s been no contest. It’s something worth keeping an eye on during this coaching search, though. The team finished 4-12 which was tied for last place in the AFC South standings.

Josh McDaniels’ decision to stay with the New England patriots fueled rumors he may replace head coach Bill Belichick.

“We want a head coach that wants to be all in”, Ballard said.

“I just don’t know how much Kraft and those guys could have sweetened that package… to me it’s so confusing”. “You don’t have a head coach, the head coach you thought you had just said no to you and is going back to your rival.” .

“There was no persuasion”.

Schefter also reported – citing league sources – that although terms of a contract were agreed upon, McDaniels had not physically signed a deal with Indianapolis.

Ballard says he quickly moved on from the five-minute phone conversation. We’ve seen a former Colts head coach put him on absolute blast. McDaniels informed Ballard that he had some bad news to deliver before telling Ballard that he’ll be staying in New England. We have work to do. “But it’s the mentally tough, gritty people that overcome these things that are successful”.

“With Josh backing out, we were disappointed, unquestionably: We were disappointed and surprised”, he said. “I’m very confident in this”.

This is not the first time LaMonte and McDaniels have parted ways.

McDaniels has settled in nicely in New England with his wife and four children since coming over in 2012. Another potential candidate, Baylor coach Matt Rhule, had already announced he was returning to the college ranks before the Colts had settled on McDaniels, who at age 41 is considered one of the game’s best young minds.

At 65, with 23 years under his belt as a head coach in the NFL, Belichick has little left to prove. Coordinators are so invested in doing their job and the task at hand, rather than taking a macro-view of the team’s football operations as a whole.

“There’s a lot of good coaches out there”, Ballard said.
