The company would also remove artificial preservatives from Chicken McNuggets and several breakfast items, including scrambled eggs, sausage patties, omelettes, bagel and biscuit breakfast sandwiches.

Dropping high fructose sugar, he added, actually does very little to ensure that McDonald’s buns are healthier than they were before.

The latest changes were announced at an event about the company’s “food journey” at its headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.

McDonald’s got rid of them in McNuggets and a number of other menu items as part of a continued commitment to being more transparent about its food, the company said Monday.

However, McDonald’s does continue to make strides to incorporate healthier items, such as adding kale and spinach to its salads, and is committed to using cage-free eggs in all USA and Canada locations by 2025.

“I applaud efforts such as those undertaken by McDonald’s in close collaboration with its suppliers and poultry farmers, to greatly reduce the use of medically important antibiotics in its animal agricultural food supply chain”, said Dr. H Morgan Scott, professor of epidemiology in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at Texas A&M University. All said, the McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets can now be enjoyed with no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, continuing a company-wide initiative to answer customer requests for healthier menu items.

Becca Harry, a representative for McDonald’s in the United States, didn’t immediately respond when the wire agency asked which artificial preservatives are being removed.

The changes affect almost half of the items on McDonald’s menu.

“Some of the changes may be a little on the late side, but it was McDonald’s that kicked off the move to cage-free eggs”, said Nomura Securities analyst Mark Kalinowski.

“We are creating a different food culture at McDonald’s”, Andres said. This includes buns used on Big Macs, Quarter Pounders, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, Filet-O-Fish and McChicken sandwiches.

Although numerous new ingredients will be more expensive to buy, the cost will not be passed on to customers, according to Marion Gross, senior vice president for supply chain at McDonald’s.

Last year, McDonald’s vowed to remove human antibiotics from its chicken supply by March 2017, a significant commitment for the chain, which has 14,000 locations in the USA and is a major seller of chicken.
