McDonald’s to serve antibiotic-free chicken, sort of

McDonald’s has removed high-fructose corn syrup from its sandwich buns and taken artificial preservatives out of items including Chicken McNuggets as it tries to appeal to diners hungering for more clarity and cleanliness in what they eat. It is also an effort to play defense against numerous competitors who promote the quality and freshness of their foods.

McDonald’s Corp. has removed all human antibiotics from its chicken supply, almost a year ahead of schedule, the company said Monday. “We are creating a different food culture at McDonald’s and that attitude is infused in everything that we do”, Mike Andres, president-McDonald’s U.S., said at a meeting with reporters at the company’s headquarters. Similarly the burger buns would be free of high-fructose corn syrup.

McDonald’s U.S. is making big changes to its food including scrapping artificial preservatives from several menu items and only using chicken that hasn’t been treated with antibiotics.

That behemoth of fast food, McDonald’s US, is making huge menu changes in order to meet the needs of customers, who want a more healthful diet. On the heels of a series of health changes over the past 18 months, McDonald’s announced yesterday that they have removed preservatives from the beloved Chicken McNuggets. It will also get rid of artificial preservatives in Chicken McNuggets and some breakfast items. Now, in an attempt to win over more health-conscious customers, it promises to ditch preservatives in chicken nuggets and remove corn syrup from its burger buns.

Previously, McDonald’s announced a commitment to source 100% cage-free eggs by 2025 in the United States and Canada, began sourcing milk in its low-fat milk jugs and Go-Gurt low-fat yogurt from cows not treated with rbST, and moved from margarine to butter in its Egg McMuffin.

There are essentially three major players in the fast-food chicken space: McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, and Yum!

McDonald’s said while the current changes will increase its costs, it will not pass on the increase to its consumers. That signalled that any excitement from all-day Egg McMuffins could already be losing steam.

– McDonald’s now is serving chicken that is free of antibiotics.

The Mirror reports that told the New York Times: “Why take a position to defend them if consumers are saying they don’t want them?”

“The reckless overuse of these critical medications on healthy livestock is contributing to our antibiotics resistance crisis”, Jean Halloran, director of food policy initiatives for Consumers Union, said in a statement.
