McDonald’s turned its Happy Meal Box into a Cardboard-like VR headset

The most recent of which was the news that Coca-Cola is looking to launch a recycling program where you can turn Coca-Cola packaging into your very own virtual reality headset. The headset is essentially the same as Google Cardboard, which basically amounts to a cardboard headset with a smart phone mounted to the end.

Everyone’s favourite junk food pit stop could just turn out to be the next place unsuspecting diner could experience virtual reality for the first time.

The iconic red Happy Meal box can be deconstructed and turned into a viewer.

While the offer is now only available in Sweden, according to reports McDonald’s hopes to roll out Happy Goggles internationally “soon”, meaning that where ever you live, you too might soon have access to the Happy Goggles. Considering Google Cardboard and its alternatives typically cost more than a standard Happy Meal, it could be a great way to bring simple VR experiences to the masses.

McDonalds is no stranger to video games, as it’s previously made deals with gaming companies to hold special promotions, like releasing the Mythical Pokemon Hoopa exclusively over the McDonalds Nintendo Network. Either way, it’s pretty insane to think back to the basic prized included in Happy Meals when I was a kid to today, where you get a pair of VR goggles instead. The Happy Goggles will only be available in 14 stores around the country for approximately $4.
