McIlroy still doesn’t seem overly impressed with his record-breaking performance of 2015, one that included a 61 in the third round that separated him from the field.
He’s missed the cut in three of his four appearances at Quail Hollow, but is coming off a strong finish last season. While McIlroy has slipped a tad this season, he’s still one of the top players in the world and flat out owns the Quail Hollow Club.
In fact, before arriving at Quail Hollow this week, McIlroy had only played 11 holes of golf in the month between Augusta, Ga., and Charlotte.
Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Branden Grace, Hideki Matsuyama and JB Holmes are all Top 20 players in world, lurking about to prevent a Rory repeat.
“This one will stress me out from a length perspective”, he said.
Rory’s a total horse for the course, but given Jimmy Walker, Justin Rose and more “horse for the course missed cuts” that have happened lately, he’s not as much of a lock as he seems to be. He lost in a playoff to Rickie Fowler in 2012, tied for 10th in 2013 and tied for eighth in 2014. “But even so, if you can drive it a little bit further than other people and keep it in the fairway … and having shorter clubs in on this golf course definitely helps”.
Without question, it’s not been a brilliant start to the season for Thomas but he still ranks 12th in par-five scoring average and 16th in approaches outside 200 yards, suggesting he has the game not only for the scoring holes but for the demanding set of par-threes, three of which are monstrously long.
Starting off Friday’s round on the 10th tee, McIlroy looked in better form when he found his opening birdie on the 11th, putting him into the red for the first time during the tournament.
While Wednesday’s practice round marked his first since the Masters in early April, McIlroy has spent long hours working on his swing. Two-time and defending champion Rory McIlroy, playing for the first time since the Masters, leads a top-heavy field, as seven of the world’s top 15 players will be in attendance with THE PLAYERS on the horizon.
Jim Furyk is another who loves Quail Hollow having won and finished runner-up at the venue the problem for him however being that he has not played an event since September of previous year following wrist injury and surgery. “I think with being so comfortable and with the great memories that I have here, it all sort of adds up to obviously a really enjoyable week, but a week where I feel like I can play really well and have a chance to contend again”.
The golf course plays very right to left and thats his game, Furyk said.

“I told my family that if I had to play golf with this amount of pain and discomfort that I wouldn’t play at all, it just wasn’t any fun”.
