They were at 131, matching the 36-hole record at the PGA Championship first set in 1983 by Hal Sutton at Riviera and last done by Jason Dufner in 2013 at Oak Hill.
Saturday at the PGA Championship was a dreary one. A decision was made before 6 p.m.to finally call play for the day. To help expedite matters, the pairings for the final round of the year’s final major will remain the same as the third round. The forecast showed 20 minutes of lightning and an hour of rain.
Meanwhile, American Jimmy Walker posted a second consecutive strong round, but countryman Robert Streb shot a remarkable seven-under 63 to grab a share of the lead at the halfway point of the tournament, reports Efe.
The US PGA Championship is in danger of stretching into a fifth day, at least, after thunderstorms prevented the leaders from even beginning their third rounds on Saturday.
Mickelson had four birdies and two bogeys Saturday, finishing more than two hours before play was initially suspended at 2:15 p.m. due to weather.
The third round will resume at 7 a.m. It looks like this year’s final major could be ending on Monday again.
Russell Knox of Scotland rushed to tap in for par on the last to complete a three-under 67 and three under par total, seconds before the klaxon sounded to signify all play must stop. “I don’t know if they would have gotten done, but they would have been close”. On 18, one of the two par-5 finishing holes, Day drilled a three wood 281 yards intoto the rough, pin-high.
Day went on a birdie barrage on the back, sinking seven in eight holes.
Stenson, the world’s No. 5 ranked player, got off to a rocky start with back-to-back bogeys on Nos.
Mickelson won the US PGA when it was last held at Baltusrol in 2005. On Friday, he hit his tee shot well out of bounds on No. 1 and wound up with a triple-bogey 7.
Lahiri got off to a poor start by getting bogeys on the par-four holes of first and third.
“I think [the major record of 63] will be broke [n] in the next two days”, Mickelson reiterated.
Phil Mickelson, who partnered McIlroy over two days here, was clear about the four-times major winner’s putting woes. Former PGA champion Padraig Harrington also shot a 65 and was at 206, with Russell Knox at 207 after a 67.
The third round of the PGA Championship is underway at Baltusrol Golf Club.
Of more interest for the overall tournament, Day, Streb and Walker were left watching. Greg Norman and Vijay Singh both did it twice.
Sweden’s Stenson, coming off his first major title two weeks ago at the British Open, was fifth on 134 with Germany’s Kaymer, the 2010 PGA Championship and 2014 US Open victor, another stroke back with Americans Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed.

Walker followed an opening 65 that had him in the lead alone after the first round with a 66 to be at 9 under with Streb.
