World No. 1 Rory McIlroy has confirmed that his ankle injury will prevent him from defending the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational next week.
McIlroy suffered a debilitating ligament rupture in his ankle less than a month ago and so his unavailability for Bridgestone comes with no surprise.
The latest withdrawal casts doubt over whether the four-time major champion will recover in time to defend his US PGA Championship crown at Whistling Straights next month. He broke his right hand prior to the British Open while playing with his children.
Tiger Woods, who has a long history of winning at Firestone, has not qualified for the event. Now, barring a minor miracle, it looks like he’ll miss all three this year.
