McLennan County has first probable case of West Nile Virus

According to the Delaware County General Health District, mosquito fogging will be taking place in the Berkshire Township area, Monday, July 18 after the West Nile virus was detected in a trap.

The positive mosquitoes were collected from Kelseyville, Upper Lake, and Anderson Marsh. The information posted on the state’s West Nile website does not say when the test was conducted or whether the virus was found in a mosquito or a bird.

La Habra and Orange County, California: Officials are reporting that Orange County can see another influx in West Nile virus with La Habra already being a large breeding site for these infected mosquitoes. Previous year was the first time since 2013 when the state has seen a death caused by the virus.

In Plymouth County, service calls from residents seeking spray to combat mosquitoes is down about 1,500, from roughly 9,000 at this time a year ago.

In a news release, district manager Peter Bonkrude said the warmer Northstate weather indicates this won’t be the last positive test of West Nile virus in the area. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals. “NIAID is committed to research efforts to advance a preventive vaccine that could protect people against West Nile virus infection”, said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci.

Precautions to avoid mosquito bites include: • Minimize time outdoors at dusk and dawn.

“Take a walk around your yard today and dump out containers of water like buckets, wading pools, fountains, and toys”, she explained. “There are a numbers of ways to reduce the risk of mosquito bites”. Ten people were infected with West Nile in MA last year, but it’s too early to tell if the numbers will increase this year, she said. “I really can’t say why some years we have some cases and why some years we don’t have any cases, but it is always in the environment”.

Patrol Officers and Neighborhood Services will try to locate any standing water in the affected areas including examining abandoned properties.

When spending time outside during the day, residents must wear a good mosquito repellent that has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
