The Halloween crackdown is part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket programs funded with federal traffic safety dollars, administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Children out trick-or-treating and the parents accompanying them are also at risk as 19 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents on Halloween night involved a drunken driver.

“We’re hoping the downward trend continues and we can celebrate a Halloween weekend with zero roadway fatalities”, Lingk said. On Halloween Night between 2009 and 2013, 119 people were killed by drunk driving.

A second checkpoint held from 8:30 p.m.to 1 a.m.in the 800 block of Mission Avenue and the 4000 block of Plaza Drive in Oceanside netted 14 citations but no DUI arrests. The SDPD advises people who choose to go out on Halloween to make a transportation plan for how they will arrive at the event and leave safely.

Over the last five Halloween Nights (2009-2013), 43 percent of all motor vehicle deaths involved drunk driving.

On Monday, the Fall Fest DUI enforcement period ended. Preliminary reports indicate 53 law enforcement agencies arrested 1225 drivers for driving impaired.

The plan shows the Phoenix Police Department will be out Friday and Saturday near Cave Creek and Bell Roads, Interstate 17 and Thunderbird Road, Northern Avenue and Seventh Street, 27th Avenue and Thomas Road, and Broadway Road and Central Avenue. The California Office of Traffic Safety a year ago made the “Designated Driver VIP” mobile app available for download.
