– Hundreds of students at a D.C. area high school walked out of class Monday in an apparent protest of Donald Trump’s presidential victory.
The concern many students felt was over trumps proposed immigration policies.
The students could be heard chanting “we reject the president-elect”.
The students said they plan to show that all groups, including minorities, can band together to show they love one another.
The students were marching toward the State Capitol. The students are part of a protest movement that has seen tens of thousands taking to the streets in USA cities large and small after Tuesday’s election.
Protesters have denounced Trump’s often-inflammatory campaign rhetoric about immigrants, Muslims and women.
“The American dream has diversity”.
“This has completely split my family apart”, said Abeliz Lebron, 17, a sophomore.
By 12:45, students were rushing into Lloyd Center.
“This election is providing a lesson in democracy”, said Superintendent Michelle King at the news conference. “I feel anyone, any race, should come here and feel welcome”.
“You’re not better than someone else because you’re a different color”. It began at 1:30 p.m. Monday to call attention to the coming Trump presidency and the controversial stances he has promoted.
“I was very much for Hillary, and so it was really important to me”, said Marijke Pieters-Kwiers, 16, a junior.
An LA Unified district spokeswoman said there was no indication of a significant drop in attendance Monday throughout the district. Clinton still leads Trump 48% to 47% in the popular vote.
United Teachers Los Angeles union applauded the walkout, saying the union “stands proudly” with the students, KLTA reported.
School officials said the walkout started around 10 a.m. and was organized by students. “We have a lot of these people”. “We encouraged people to write their Congress members”.
Students carrying signs and shouting slogans marched toward the city’s nearby Mariachi Plaza. “We will have people explaining what can realistically happen in the next four years”.

“We hope to get our rights and just get our freedom. No violence, no property damage and we are encouraging students to go back to school and parents to get their students back to school”, according to a statement from the Portland Police Bureau. “Let’s see what he does”, said Rodriguez.
