“The 6’3” hoop star was known for the infamous confetti basket in which fans were doused with a basket filled with confetti. “He was an incredible entertainer and brought happiness and lifelong memories to millions around the world”. SWEET GEORGIA BROWN: The signature moment of every Harlem Globetrotters game was when the players gathered in a circle and showed off their ball-handling and passing skills as “Sweet Georgia Brown” played over the loudspeaker.
He left the Globetrotters in 1979 and launched several of his own basketball teams.
They played a total of over 16,000 games in over 100 countries.
“We are now dedicating our current 90th anniversary tour to Meadowlark Lemon, along with Marques Haynes, who we lost in May”, the team posted to its official twitter account Monday morning. He went on to play for a variety of teams before rejoining the Harlem side for a short tour in 1994.
For years on those trips, Lemon was the ringmaster, having taken over the role from Reece “Goose” Tatum. He helped elucidate the funnest aspects of basketball to the furthest reaching corners of the world, and was one of the game’s most beloved figures.
In the Hanna-Barbera Harlem Globetrotters cartoon, which first aired on CBS, Lemon was voiced by Scatman Crothers. In his later years Lemon became an ordained minister and had a regular series on Trinity Broadcasting Network.
