Medal joy for Iran as tragic cyclist is remembered after fatal crash

They marked the highlights of the closing ceremony of the Rio Paralympics on September 18, as all eyes were shifting to the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

Brazilian officials handed over the flag to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games as the 11 day long global sports event ended today.

“Chinese athletes are swept the Rio sports venue with successes”.

The ParalympicsGB team won 64 golds at the Rio Games, the most by a British team since 1988, and147 medals in total.

Philip Craven, the International Paralympic Committee president, said Golbarnezhad’s death “cast a dark shadow”, but overall “Rio 2016 will be remembered as a successful Paralympic Games and a Games that surprised many”.

Compared to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the national Para team won one medal less, but in London only seven athletes won medals, while in Rio eight athletes took medals home. Ukraine with 117 medals and the United States with 115 followed.

Paralympic officials said Golbarnezhad’s family in Iran had been informed and the Iranian team was also told the news during a meeting at the Athletes’ Village.

Manchester, which is the home of British Cycling and taekwondo and the ParalympicsGB swimming team, is the ideal place for a national parade, according to Manchester City Council deputy leader Sue Murphy. 107 gold medals, 81 silver and 51 bronze – and 51 world records were broken. At Rio they won medals across 18 sports while in London they won medals across 16 sports.

On Monday, Putin again blasted the decision of the IPC to ban his country from the Rio 2016 Paralympics, while his spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed it is illegal.

Take the Paralympics for example. The other two WRs were in track & field by athletes David Blair and Rachael Morrison.

China has topped the medal board in the last three Summer Paralympics, beginning at the 2004 Athens Games. Seven of those medals went to athletes who have ties to Arizona.
