Medical Marijuana Legalized by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos signed a decree Tuesday legalizing and regulating medical marijuana, the latest softening of the country’s hardline tactics in the war on drugs.

The decree, jointly drafted by the ministries of Health, Justice and Agriculture, “regulates the… cultivation of cannabis seeds and plants, as well as the processes of production, manufacture, export, distribution, sale, use and possession of cannabis and its derivatives, strictly destined for medical and scientific purposes”.
The reproduction of the story/photograph in any form will be liable for legal action.
“Today, Colombia took an important step into the vanguard of the fight against sicknesses”, said Santos in a statement.
A legalization wave has swept over Latin America, which has been overwhelmed by drug-related deaths and violence in recent years.
Colombia has always been held up with U.S.-backed policies to get rid of narcotics production, ABC News reported. This is huge news for the suffering patients of Colombia, and also is big news for other reform efforts in other nations, as it will increase the momentum of reform.
Colombians are already allowed to posses small quantities of any narcotic for personal use, with the Constitutional Court guaranteeing the “free development of one’s personality”. Colombia is the largest supplier of cocaine to the United States. “It places Colombia in the group of countries that are at the forefront… in the use of natural resources to fight disease”.

Medical marijuana has been operating in a legal gray area in Colombia, with no real regulations. The company aspires to lead the manufacturing of medical marijuana products in the country.
