Meeks Drops 26, Leads North Carolina Over Temple in Veterans Classic

The Stags were within 28-27 with less than six minutes to play in the first half, before North Carolina held a 40-32 edge at the break and pulled away in the second half. The Tar Heels’ lone loss came all the way back in Week 1 versus SC.

It wasn’t a blowout, which was about the only potential downfall for Temple heading into a nationally-televised game at the Naval Academy. Although turnovers were not an issue earlier in the year for Miami, penalties have been a nagging problem for the Hurricanes all season, as the team leads the nation averaging 84.9 penalty yards a game. The offensive woes were not helped by Carolina’s lackluster free throw performance as the Heels were 6-14 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes.

“Nate really gave us a bigger spark than anybody in the game”, Williams said. Part of the reason Gilbert got clean looks at the basket was because Fairfield guard Jerome Segura was penetrating so deeply into the lane and drawing tons of interest from defenders before dishing the ball to his shooter, Williams said. Guards Levan Alston and Trey Lowe scored 12 and eight points, respectively, and center Ernest Aflakpui saw 12 minutes of action. That dream died sometime before Miami went down 45-0 in Chapel Hill, turning the ball over three times in the first half.

Jillian Alleyne finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds for OR for her 70th career double-double.

North Carolina got off to a slow start and Temple capitalized off it, keeping it close with North Carolina. “That’s a tremendous learning experience, for those three guys especially”.

Sophomores Petersen and Lexi Bando, were a double threat to Carolina’s defense with their three-point shots – nothing but net for both ladies. Britt on Sunday led UNC with 17 points, which tied his career high, and he thrived on Sunday after scoring 15 points during the Tar Heels’ season-opening 91-67 victory against Temple Friday. Many were curious to see how the team would fare without its quarterback, but the Tar Heels were just fine.

I think he’s comfortable, he’s confident.

“I thought we competed”, Fairfield coach Sydney Johnson said, “that was the best thing we did this afternoon”. Johnson finished with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting and was one of the bright spots from the charity stripe.

“As a team we felt everybody is on an equal stage and we didn’t care where they were ranked”, Lowe said.

What can Brown do for you? “We practiced hard. We felt that when we came into this game that we would be ready to go”. Starting back-court mate Theo Pinson had seven points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Senior forward Perry Ellis contributed 16 points and junior guard Wayne Selden added 15, as KU won its 43rd straight home opener. “It’s just definitely something that you just don’t brush by or pretend that it’s not happening or not hurting us”. Saturday’s loss marked the first time in school history that the football team has given up 58 or more points twice in the same season.
