Medical charity MSF said because Newman was born in global waters, his nationality was still under debate.

A midwife on board the ship MV Aquarius described the birth as “normal… in dangerously abnormal conditions”.

Faith has made a decision to name her boy, Newman Otas.

Most of the deaths in 2016 came from people risking the Libya to Italy route, which is considered dramatically more risky.

As many as 3,165 people who have attempted the journey have died at sea, and the International Organization of Migration predicts that the number of deaths this year will surpass last year’s total, which was 3,771.

Since the beginning of the operations on April 21st, MSF teams on-board the Dignity, Bourbon Argos and Aquarius (in partnership with SOS Mediterranee) have rescued 12,003 people during 89 different rescue operations. However, a woman from Cameroon did give birth to a baby in May.

“I was very stressed on the rubber boat, sitting on the floor of the boat with the other women and children, panicking that I would go into labour”, she said. The BBC said that they were rescued just 24 hours before the baby was born. “Mum, bub, dad and 2 big brothers are all well”, she said.

But as the boat was drifting through the Mediterranean Sea, more than 40 kilometres north east of Tripoli, it was rescued by the MSF rescue boat.

“The gorgeous little guy was born in worldwide waters; so, his nationality is still under discussion”, she added.
