But Trump was quick to clarify that, surely, his comment was “not the most horrible” thing that’s ever been said about Kelly. [Kelly: ‘Many times.’] Oh.
He said his initial thinking was that she was “very involved in the Cruz campaign, so that set her in the category of fair game for attacks”.
She reiterated that argument during Tuesday’s interview. “I could have maybe used different language, uh, in a couple of instances”, he said.
Kelly pressed him about any regrets he had about his campaign, and the tycoon admitted a few.
When a caller asked Kelly which of her Fox colleagues were supportive and which ones were not, Kelly answered saying she had several people who privately reached out to her during the ordeal.
Kelly made a clandestine visit to the Trump Tower in April to negotiate the interview. “First of all, I didn’t think it was really a question, I thought it was a statement”, he said. “I have great respect for you that you were able to call me and say ‘let’s get together and let’s talk'”. Trump insinuated to CNN that Kelly had been menstruating at the time of the debate. Trump, who implored Kelly to recognize his humanity, didn’t seem to reciprocate that much and said he is just a man “fighting for survival”. He also said that if he does not win, “I will consider it to be a total and complete waste of time, energy and money”. Reporter: Their first interview since this explosive moment at that republican presidential debate nine months ago. “So I’m certainly not going to do it with you”. “After like 7 or 8 o’clock, if I’m home I’ll do it myself”.
Trump was clearly pleased with the detente with Kelly, enough to promote the interview on Twitter and event to live tweet the one-on-one.
Anchor and journalist Megyn Kelly’s first interview with Donald Trump will air on Fox tonight.
He participated in another debate moderated by Kelly in March but unleashed a fresh attack later on Twitter, saying that she was “highly overrated” and “crazy”. Seeing how alcohol affected his brother dissuaded Trump from ever drinking, he told Kelly.
In the final segment of the special, Kelly asked Trump some “rapid-fire questions”, including inquiries about his favourite book (All Quiet on the Western Front) and movie (Citizen Kane).
