Mehbooba Mufti maintains suspense over J K govt formation

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday alleged that those involved in anti-India sloganeering at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) aren’t being arrested because BJP wants to form government with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mehbooba said peace between neighbors India and Pakistan was imperative for lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

“At that time most of the political pundits had expressed cynicism over the enterprise of hope piloted by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, but Jammu and Kashmir had, after going through a long era of turmoil, started witnessing real peace and progress during that golden era with every section of the society contributing towards peace and reconciliation efforts”, she said.

Since then, Mehbooba, whose party is the largest with 27 MLAs in the 87-member House, has been maintaining suspense over the government formation.

She said her father was of the belief that Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had got a “huge mandate” is “the person who can revive the stalled dialogue process between India and Pakistan”.

The PDP president said government formation was not a big deal and she could have done that like Rajiv Gandhi did after his mother’s demise or for that matter Farooq Abdullah did after Sheikh Abdullah died. We aligned with BJP earlier not for the CM’s chair but for the welfare of people. You trusted Mufti sahib blindly, but trust me with open eyes.

“The main challenge for my party is not the National Conference or power”.

“If I choose to assume power, it would have to be for peace”.

Noting that “these things are presently threatened”, she noted: “Youth are getting disgruntled with the situation and some of them are taking to the gun. But my father had always strived for the interests and dignity of his own people and that is what led him to enter into an alliance with the BJP with the belief that their being in power at the Centre will be of great help”, she said.
