Actor Mel Gibson confirmed there will be a follow-up for “The Passion of the Christ” titled “The Resurrection”.

Now, more than 12 years on – and with more than a few more high-profile personal scandals in the interim – Gibson says he plans to return to the Biblical story with ‘The Resurrection’.

The Passion of the Christ was one of the most talked about and controversial movies of 2004. “I mean, we can all read what happened, but in order to really experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s gonna take some doing”.

Given that Gibson’s biblical work remains the highest-grossing R-rated film in USA history (with a $370.2 million tally), this isn’t altogether surprising news – except for the fact that The Passion’s portrait of Jews (and its extreme bloodshed) gave birth to a considerable backlash against both the film and its director.

The “Mad Max” star praised “Passion of the Christ” writer Randall Wallace, calling him “a brilliant writer” and “a great director”.

Randall wasn’t actually involved in The Passion of the Christ, but directed Mel in We Were Soldiers and took charge of hit Christian film Heaven Is For Real. “So, he is a good writer and director”, Gibson added. And you know, it’s not The Passion 2, it’s called The Resurrection.

Gibson is now promoting his upcoming film “Hacksaw Ridge”.

The actor called The Passion of the Christ is “the ultimate superhero film”, explaining he believes a film about faith stands out from the action movies now seen in cinemas.

Well, faith is a real thing. But, they do operate on a higher level, on a supernatural level.
